History

Markandey had age of only 14 years.
He was destined for a short life.
His parents who were Rishis predicted the day when the God of death was going to arrive to take out his soul from his body by his death rope. So they became gloomy in his last days.

When Markandey came to know this, he started the chanting of Mrityunjaya mantra ie the mantra conquering death.
Hence the God of Death who made attempts to pull out the soul of Markandey from his body got unsuccessful in His attempts.

Pleased by the dedication of Markandey towards this mantra chanting, Lord Shiva manifested and blessed him with a eternal life. Hence this is called a Siddha mantra in Hinduism as it gave success to Markandey and he won death.

Later he wrote Purans like Markandey Puran which is still guiding humanity towards religion, salvation and such good things

Mantra is as below

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim
Pushtivardhanam
Urvarukmiv Bandhanaat
Mrityormokshiya mamritaat
